Research day highlights fellowship program’s success

17 June 2021

The annual Ochsner Research Day is an opportunity to a showcase the breadth and depth of research conducted across the Ochsner Health system by clinicians, scientists, nurses, pharmacists, residents, fellows, and students.

Dr. Leonardo Seoane, MD, Chief Academic Officer, Ochsner Health said one of the highlights of the day was showcasing the research done by our Postdoctoral Research Fellows.

“As our medical program graduate students in November every year, there is a six-month gap between graduation and them starting their residency programs.

“This period has given us the opportunity to introduce our Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program.”

Through a competitive application process Ochsner Health recruits medical graduates into the fellowship program allowing them to remain engaged in translational, clinical, and health services research.

“They work in a highly collaborative research environment with leading clinicians and clinician-scientists,” Dr. Seoane said.

“The program has been extremely successful, and it was wonderful to see the calibre of research being produced by these fellows.”

Another highlight of the day was keynote speaker Dimitrios Kontoyiannis, MD, Deputy Head, Division of Internal Medicine, MD Anderson Cancer Center who spoke about the rapidly evolving field, a controversial field, of fungal infections and COVID-19.

Dr. Kontoyiannis has authored over 630 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has given over 350 lectures in national/international conferences and academic institutions.

He is considered the leading mycology expert world-wide (expertscape.com) with an H index of 113 and over 55,000 citations. His research group is credited for many and sustained contributions to clinical, translational, and experimental mycology.
