How Immunotherapy helped a stage 4 Lung Cancer patient

One of the most exciting innovations in cancer treatment is something called immunotherapy.

It's a method using the body's own immune system to control and eliminate cancer.

When Michael Leboeuf, a Louisiana native and smoker of many years, heard the news that he had stage 4 lung cancer, he started thinking about dying.

"You start thinking, the party's over and you feel helpless,' he said.

By the time Michael met Dr Burke Brooks Jr. MD, at the Ochsner Medical Center – Baton Rouge, he was very sick.

Through genetic testing, Dr Brooks determined that a new treatment called immunotherapy could help Michael.

"It's altering our own immune system to help fight cancers,'' Dr Brooks said.

The treatment was used successfully in combination with chemotherapy and radiation. Michael also went into a smoking cessation program.

The Ochsner Cancer Center in Baton Rouge features state-of-the-art, innovative treatment options in cancer care, such as 15 personalized and semi-private chemo infusion stations.

This is the only cancer program in the Baton Rouge to conveniently offer a hematology and oncology outpatient health center with both chemotherapy infusion and radiation oncology services on one floor, in the same building.
