Presented by the Research Committees of the UQ Medical Society, the Ochsner Medical Student Association, and the Academy for Medical Education, the UQ Medical Student Research Conference is always a key event in the UQ-Ochsner students’ calendars.

This year’s event took place in September at the Translational Research Institute and was attended by over 100 students.

Guest speaker Professor Nalini Pather, Director of the Academy for Medical Education, opened the conference and shared insights on her career in medical education. Keynote speaker Associate Professor Helen Benham, spoke about her perspectives on recognising opportunities, a point illustrated by her stellar career trajectory spanning several disciplines within health care.

This year’s call for abstracts attracted 110 students who submitted 122 abstracts, from which 10 oral presentations and 51 posters were accepted. Out of the selected posters, 46 individual UQ-Ochsner students submitted a total of 75 abstracts.

“The UQ Medical Student Research Conference is the research highpoint of the academic year and all medical students across all years are encouraged to present their research. I am always delighted to see that the participation by the UQ-Ochsner students consistently exceeds the rest of their cohort and demonstrates not only their interest, but their breadth of experience in research,” said Professor Di Eley, Director MD Student Research.

UQ-Ochsner student Dhaval Patel took a prize as poster runner-up while 7 other students (Michael Mullen, Serena Mathew, Linda Kim, Daniel Ashley, Aditya Manuel, Abdul Rahim and Audrey Shawley) received an honourable mention for their poster.

Following the success of last year’s conference format, the oral presentations took the form of a modified 3-Minute Thesis (3-MT). The 3M+1Q comprises a 3-minute presentation with one static slide plus 1 question from the audience. A total of 10 students were invited to present with UQ-Ochsner students present both in-person (Kyleigh Kriner, Venkata Paruchuri, Johnson Khor) and by video from the Ochsner Clinical School (Alexander Smith, Bryn Rubin). Johnson Khor and Aaron Lerch were awarded runner-up prizes for their presentations.
