White Coat Wednesday: Kali Juracek

White Coat Wednesday
Published 24 Aug, 2022  ·  1 minute

This week on White Coat Wednesday, we meet Kali Juracek, a third-year UQ-Ochsner medical student.

Kali is originally from Scottsdale, Arizona and she completed a Bachelor in Health and Exercise Science with a concentration in sport medicine and biomedical sciences at Colorado State University.

She was always pretty certain that medicine was her path with a father being a physician and mother a nurse so she made sure to pursue an undergraduate degree that ticked off the medical school prerequisites. Kali also volunteered in an Emergency Department and got her Emergency Medical Technician Certificate after graduating. She then worked as a pre-hospital provider in Denver, Colorado and found an interest in Emergency Medicine. That encouraged her to apply for paramedic school which has a similar structure to medical school with a didactic portion and a field observership. She talks about the extensive hours in ER, labour and delivery unit and the OR practicing advanced airways. After paramedic school Kali worked in Pueblo County, Colorado before making the big move to Australia.

We discover how she came across the UQ-Ochsner program (thanks Dad!) and what a great opportunity it was for her to get closer to family in New Orleans in phase 2. We hear about the two year of the global pandemic and how she felt during that time, surrounded by her family of international friends.

Kali shares what she loved about her move to New Orleans and we find out what the third year has in store including many clinical rotations that teach you so many new skills and solidify your interests.
