The Nunukul Yuggera Aboriginal Dancers performed a traditional Welcome to Country dance and Kyle Ryan, a third-year UQ medical student shared his thoughts and advice on being a future Indigenous doctor.

Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Deborah Terry AO acknowledged the dedication and drive that was required to be admitted into medical school and welcomed the 484 commencing medical students to UQ.

“I’m thrilled to welcome you all here to UQ to begin your Doctor of Medicine.

And to those of you who are joining us from somewhere other than Brisbane, either from regional Queensland, interstate or overseas, it’s my pleasure to extend a very warm welcome to this wonderful city,” she said.

University of Queensland Medical Society (UQMS) President and third-year medical student, Prabasha Thilakaratne, introduced the activities and support available through the student society and shared his experience with the new cohort.

“Go at your own pace, enjoy and take advantage of every opportunity, make friends with everyone around you, support and help each other and learn together”, he said.

The ceremony concluded with the reading of the Declaration of Geneva, led by Medical Dean Professor Stuart Carney.

The pledge acknowledges respect for human rights of patients, the value of sharing knowledge with the community and profession, and the right and obligation of physicians to care for themselves, and to maintain their abilities for the benefit of society.

Following the ceremony, the students had the opportunity to meet each other and become familiar with their new Learning Communities, as well as meet Faculty staff members and learn about the opportunities and activities available at UQ.

Class of 2026, we wish you a warm welcome to your new home for the next two years.
