The 2024 UQ-Ochsner Healthcare Summit was jointly hosted by The University of Queensland Medical School and Ochsner Health and explored how innovation can enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of our healthcare systems.

UQ Faculty of Medicine Executive Dean and Summit host Professor Geoff McColl said the challenge of improving value in healthcare is universal.
“Ageing and growing populations, multimorbidity, the tyranny of distance, rising costs and workforce shortages are widening the gap between supply and demand,” Professor McColl said.
“To address these challenges in a purposeful way, innovative solutions are essential.”
Since 2009, The University of Queensland Medical School and Ochsner Health in Louisiana have been engaged in a collaborative partnership focused on education and research.
Professor Leo Seoane, Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer at Ochsner Health said the shared vision is to address the needs of the health workforce.
“The UQ-Ochsner Healthcare Summit is a platform for meaningful conversations about healthcare delivery and impact,” Professor Seoane said.
Topic 1: Australian and United States Healthcare environment and challenges
The health systems in Australia and the United States differ significantly in structure and performance. Mr Pete November, CEO of Ochsner Health and Dr Peter Steer, Group Chief Executive at Mater Health gives an overview of their two respective healthcare environments and the challenges they face.
Topic 2: Digital Health
Digital health initiatives in both Australia and the United States are transforming healthcare delivery by leveraging technology to improve patient outcomes and system efficiency. Dr Denise Basow, Executive Vice President and Chief Digital Officer at Ochsner Health and Professor Clair Sullivan, Director of the Queensland Digital Health Centre at UQ share their insights on a global trend towards integrating digital solutions to meet modern healthcare needs.
Topic 3: Workforce trends and challenges
The health workforce in both Australia and the United States faces significant challenges. Hear from Professor Lisa Nissen, Centre for the Business and Economics of Health at UQ and Professor Leo Seoane, Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer at Ochsner Health on how both countries are grappling with these challenges.
